”Close Run Thing At The Top of Grade 1”        Jack Nixon

Less than a month into the new season and all the indicators are that winning Grade 1 is going to be no easy task given the highly competitive start made by the leading contenders. Strength in depth could in fact be a key factor in the final analysis.

Leaders Mannofield in particular have access to numerous, young talented players, all ready to step up, or in some cases step down to help the cause. Second placed Crescent – Dunecht are similarly placed, having competition for every place in the team, while third placed Bon Accord, serial winners of the top grade have finally woken up to the benefits of having a second team.

Fourth placed Knight Riders also have a second string to turn to when injuries and unavailability kick in.

Shrewd use of player resources could also determine the outcome of the title. There are enough wise heads in all camps to ensure the best  players come into the game when it matters most.

It is far too early to be making predictions, but if I were pushed to make a choice my money would be on Mannofield to stay the course, which given the array of talent on show in the other camps, is probably too presumptuous. Writing off my old friends at Bon Accord would be foolish, while I believe Knight Riders are capable of winning not just cups, but now have the staying power to win the league. The Groats Road outfit are, however my strong tip for the Aberdeenshire Cup.

But it’s the leadership skills and all round skills in the Crescent – Dunecht team who might yet hold sway in what I do believe will be one of the great seasons in the top flight, especially when the weather gets warmer.

Away from Grade 1, it’s nice to see Ellon Gordon making a return to run scoring form. Perhaps the chills of Gordon Park suit captain Ally Addy and his high scoring chums.
